Hello English-speaking readers!

This website is of interest to all Albertans who wish to learn more about Alberta's Francophonie. It gathers all services available in French in the Province of Alberta.

Did you know that Alberta has the third largest Francophone minority population in the country, with the first two being in Ontario and New Brunswick? According to the Linguistic Characteristics data from Statistics Canada 2011 Census, 81,085 Albertans have French as their mother tongue. This is an 18% increase since 2006, while the population of Alberta grew by approximately 11%. Furthermore, 238,770 Albertans have the capacity to conduct a conversation in French, comparatively to 225,085 in 2006.

French was the first European language spoken in the territory which became Alberta in 1905. Thus, French has been a well-established language in Alberta for 200 years and continues to spread throughout the province, thanks to the commitment of its communities and French institutions. The popularity of French education and French immersion is continuously increasing; another proof of the Francophone vitality in western Canada.
